Make Fun Shaped Crayons with Your Kids

Make fun shaped crayons with a silicone mold

Do you have a box of broken crayons lying around? Don’t throw them away! You can use them to make fun shaped crayons with your kids. It’s a great way to recycle old crayons and create new and unique ones that your kids will love to use.

This craft is perfect for kids of all ages and abilities. It’s also a great activity for birthday parties or play dates.

Run around the house, search between the sofa cushions, and dive into your kids backpacks – if you have young children, I guarantee you have broken crayons all over the place in your home. Especially at the end of the school year when your kids come home with the leftover school supplies. Personally, I recommend using Crayola brand crayons so find as many as possible.

TIP: I tested Crayola brand and RoseArt brand crayons. While both brands work, the pigments in the RoseArt crayons didn’t blend well resulting in a splotchy appearance. See image below for a comparison. I also tested the random crayons my kids received from restaurants, and they don’t melt well. I’ve heard that Crayola washable crayons don’t work either, but I have not tried them.

This project is a fun project to do with your kids and repurpose those broken crayons.

Supplies:

  • Crayola crayons
  • Silicone mold in your preferred shape (I used this one.)
  • Baking sheet
  • Oven
  • Craft knife (for adult use only)
The image shows all the supplies needed for this project.

How to Make Fun Shaped Crayons

Step 1: Unwrap the crayons.

A craft knife is nice to have but not a must, especially if your children are helping you with this craft.

If you are using the craft knife, slice through the paper wrappings to speed up the peeling process. It takes longer to peel them by hand, but kids love unwrapping crayons. (How many times have you caught them peeling off the wrappers before anyways? Now they have a reason!) Just make sure all the paper wrappings are removed from the crayons.

Step 2: Fill up the mold with broken crayons.

You can find an assortment of silicone mold shapes in the soap making and baking departments of your local hobby store. Or look on Amazon!

Since I used my fun shaped crayons as party favors, I used mold for dog paw and bone shapes to match my daughter’s birthday party theme.

Break the unwrapped crayons into small pieces and place them into the mold. You can mix and match the colors. We made one for my daughter’s teacher in her favorite sports team’s colors.

Step 3: Make your crayons!

Pre-heat your oven to 220 degrees.

Then, place your filled mold on your baking sheet and bake it for about 20 minutes.

Carefully remove the baking sheet from the oven and set aside to cool for another 20 minutes.

Next, remove the mold and place on a cooling rack for another 10 minutes. When it is completely dry, push your crayon out of the mold from the bottom.

Using them as party favors? You can find cute party favor bags at Walmart or the Dollar Store.
