How to Sew a Book Sleeve: Beginner Friendly
Sewing a book sleeve is an easy beginner sewing project! Not only are they fun to make, with endless customization options, but they also make a thoughtful homemade gift for the book lover in your life.

Every book lover – me included – knows the pain of torn pages and bent covers, but tucking your book into a book sleeve can solve all these problems.
I always make sure to tuck my latest read into a book sleeve before placing it in my carry-on bag for a flight. In the past, I have often discovered my book torn or folded at odd angles from being moved through security and stored under the seat in front of me.

Book Sleeves can be Adapted to your Skill Level
Book sleeves can be as simple or as complicated as you want them to be. If you are starting out as a sewist, you can make the book sleeve in my tutorial below. For beginners, cotton or quilting cotton fabrics are best. They offer a large assortment of patterns and styles, so finding one you like won’t be difficult. (You might have issues narrowing it down, though.)
Cotton fabric runs through a sewing machine smoothly with a universal 80/12 sewing machine needle. Once you are comfortable tackling other fabrics, I recommend trying a book sleeve in cotton canvas (lightweight) or denim fabric. These are more durable and will hold up to more abuse.
My book sleeve tutorial below is for a simple book sleeve without closures of any sort and a front pocket. Simple, straightforward, and perfect for a beginner.
But you can always flex your creative muscles if you feel comfortable doing so. Try adding a button and an elastic band closure at the top. Or a ribbon closure. Maybe a small tab and snap closure? Add a second pocket or section the front one into different-sized pockets. Like ruffles? Then, find a way to bring that into your book sleeve. With a few small modifications, the possibilities are endless!
Sew, let’s get started! (Pun absolutely intended!)

Gather your Supplies for your Book Sleeve:
- 2 coordinating fabrics: cotton or quilting cotton are recommended
- Fabric scissors or rotary cutter
- Sewing machine
- Fusible fleece
- Ruler
- Fabric pen or marker
- Iron

Step 1: Prepare your fabric
Moving forward, I will label each fabric as fabric A or fabric B for clarity. Fabric A is the fabric you will use for both the pocket (you need 2 pieces) and the back exterior side of the book sleeve (1 piece). Fabric B is the fabric you will use for the front exterior side of the book sleeve (1 piece) as well as the lining (2 pieces). This labeling will help you keep track of the pieces and their purpose as you sew.
For your fusible fleece, I recommend Pellon 987F, or you can use another equivalent. Just be sure it’s fusible on one side. You can use cotton batting (non-fusible), but I find, for beginners, having it fused to the fabric keeps the batting from slipping during sewing.
Cut your fabrics and fusible fleece:
- Fabric A: cut 3 pieces at 9.25 by 7.25 inches
- Fabric B: cut 3 pieces at 9.25 by 7.25 inches
- Fusible fleece: cut 2 pieces at 9.25 by 7.25 inches
[This tutorial is for an book sleeve with a finished size of 8.25 x 6.25 inches (height × width). This size book sleeve fits most small paperback and mass‑market paperback novels. If you need a size larger (10 x7 inches), cut your fabric and fusible fleece to 11 x 8 inches.]
Step 2: Make the pocket
For this book sleeve, we are making the pocket at an angle instead of straight across. I feel like it gives it a little character. Straight pockets can be boring. 😉
For the pocket, you will use two of the fabric A pieces you cut earlier. Place one piece on top of the other, right sides together. Be sure to line up the edges.

Choose one short side (7.25 inches) to be the top of the fabric and place your ruler from there down the long side (9.25 inches). Use your fabric pen/marker to mark on one side 1.5 inches from the top and 3.25 inches from the top on the other side.

Using the ruler, draw a line connecting the two points. Pin or clip your fabric together and take it to the sewing machine. Sew along the line you just drew, back stitching at the beginning and end.

Next, trim your seam and turn the pieces right side out, and iron along the seam.
Top stitch at ¼” from the seam edge. Set aside.

Step 3: Prepare the exterior pieces
You will need to grab the exterior fabric pieces: 1 fabric A and 1 fabric B. Following the manufacturer’s directions, fuse the fusible fleece to the back side of both pieces.

Turn the fabric B piece front side facing up. Lay your pocket on top of the fabric B piece and baste it along the edges at ¼ inch from the edge. This will hold the pocket in place while we finish sewing the book sleeve.

Step 4: Sew the book sleeve together
Lay both exterior pieces (with fleece fused to the back side) in front of you with right sides facing up.
Lay the lining pieces (fabric B) right side facing down to the top of each of the exterior pieces and clip or pin along the top.
Sew the lining pieces to the exterior pieces along the top side with a ½ inch seam allowance.

Open the seam and press it with an iron. Lay on side open on top of the other open side (right sides together), and line up the seams down the middle. Pin or clip in place.

Sew the two pieces together using a ½ inch seam allowance, but leave a 3 inch opening at the bottom of the lining for turning.
Clip the corners close to the seam, making sure not to clip the seam itself.

Step 5: Finishing the book sleeve
Using the small opening at the bottom of the lining, turn the book sleeve right side out. Use a turning stick or the pointed end of scissors to gently push out the corners. Then, sew the opening closed and tuck the lining into the book sleeve.

Iron around the top edge of the book sleeve and top stitch ¼ inch around the top.

Give your new book sleeve a good pressing with the iron and, voilà!, you have a book sleeve!
