DIY Wood Firecrackers July 4th Home Decor

Making wood firecrackers is a fun, easy project for Independence Day home décor that adds a handmade touch to your seasonal display. They make an eye-catching addition to a July 4th party centerpiece, mantel display, or bookshelf, and can be customized with paint, ribbon, and distressing to match any theme or color scheme.

Gather your Supplies for Your Wood Firecrackers:

• Wood dowel 1 1/8” x 36” 
• Small project hand saw (or a miter saw if you have one)
• Red, white, and blue acrylic paint (matte or chalk)
• Jute string
• Drill with 1/8” drill bit
• Hot glue gun with glue stick
• Sandpaper fine grade
• Painter’s tape
• 1/8” wide tape
• Ruler
• Pencil
• Fine tip paint brush or star stencil
• Foam brushes

Step 1: Prepare your wood dowel

From your wood dowel, you will need to cut three pieces (firecrackers). Using a ruler and pencil, mark 4 inches from the end of the dowel. Then, mark 5 inches from the 4-inch mark, and 6 inches from the 5-inch mark. You should have three pencil lines along your wood dowel like this:

Using your hand saw, make a straight cut along each of the pencil marks. (Lots of elbow grease here!)

Once you have three pieces, grab the sandpaper and sand down the cuts to make them smooth.

Paint all three of them with one coat of white paint.

Step 2: Paint the 6-inch firecracker

Let’s start with the 6-inch firecracker. It should have one white coat already. Now you need to paint it blue….all over!

Let it dry, then give it a second coat of blue. And let that dry too.

When adding the stars, you can use a stencil or hand paint them. I used a fine tipped paint brush and hand painted mine. Set aside to dry.

Step 3: Paint the 5-inch firecracker

Next up is the 5-inch piece. It, too, should have one coat of white paint already. Add lines across the wood lengthwise and evenly dispersed using the 1/8” wide tape.

With the foam brush, dab red paint between the lines of tape. You will need two coats of red paint. Set aside to dry.

After the two coats of paint dry, remove the tape.

Step 4: Paint the 4-inch firecracker

For this one, start by adding a second coat of white paint and let it fully dry. Once dry, place a piece of painter’s tape around the center of the wood piece.

Paint one end red and the other end blue using two coats for each side. Set aside to dry.

Step 5: Adding the fuses

While the glue gun warms, use a drill with a 1/8″ bit to make a short hole centered on the top of each wood piece.

Grab your jute string and cut three fuses each will be 2 ½” long.

Place a small drop of glue into the hole and push one end of one of the cut jute string pieces into the hole and glue blob.

Repeat the process on the other two firecrackers.

Now that you have three firecrackers, you need to find a place to display them. I added two pieces of jute string (26” each) by wrapping them around all three and tying a bow.

You can add ribbons or charms or sand them a little for a more rustic look or leave them as they are. Use them as part of a table center piece, display them on a mantle or tiered tray.
